I recently run the OS X Server app on Yosemite. Now each time I shutdown or restart my mac, it asking for administrator password. I don't want to run my MacBook Pro as a server. I ran this app just to test something, now I want to reset to the previous state. Yosemite Server – Foundation Services is the first book in the Yosemite Server series. Great guide, thanks John.

Just a note, in case anyone has the same issue. At first I couldn't get this to work. I tried logging out and back in (still no joy), then restarting the mac (still no joy).
Try doing both of those first. However, if, like me, you still can't get the local host site to load, try the following: You should find a file at /Library/WebServer/Documents/index.html.en . This contains the text 'It works!' referred to in the post. What I did was duplicate that file in the same folder and changed the duplicate's name to 'index.html', leaving the original in situ.
Both local and user sites then loaded. After which, I was able to delete the duplicated file and everything now works without issue. Just to be clear, leave the original file index.html.en where it is, untouched and unharmed throughout this step.

Not sure why I had to take this mysterious detour - probably something local to my machine, but if you're having trouble after following the guide above, see if it helps.

Anything from Apple's download servers is an update, and not a full installer for that version of the operating system. The only full upgrade installers are in the Mac App Store, and here is the link to How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra.

Before you leap from Yosemite, check the specific printer/scanner vendor driver sites to verify if either have High Sierra driver support. Also check with your third-party applications vendor sites that their applications remain compatible with High Sierra, and preferably, are 64-bit applications. Although the vendor sites are the last word on application support, you may find RoaringApps helpful too.
I would also recommend the following:
- Download and run the free Malwarebytes for Mac before any upgrade to see if any malware presently exists on your Mac, and if found, can be removed. Subscription for continued realtime features is purely optional.
- Boot into Yosemite Recovery (⌘-R) and run Disk Utility First Aid on your startup drive.
- Perform one last Time Machine backup before the upgrade.
